Menopause and Your Oral Health: What Every Woman Needs to Know

Ladies, as we navigate the changes that come with menopause, it's important to remember that our oral health needs attention too! Fluctuating hormones, particularly the decrease in estrogen, can have a surprising impact on our teeth and gums.

What might you notice?

Dry Mouth (Xerostomia): Reduced saliva flow is common, increasing the risk of cavities as saliva helps neutralize acids and wash away food.

Gum Sensitivity & Disease: Gums may become more sensitive, prone to bleeding, or recede. Menopause can make women more susceptible to gingivitis and periodontitis (gum disease), which can lead to bone loss around the teeth.

Changes in Taste: Some women experience altered taste sensations.

Bone Density Changes: Just like bones elsewhere in the body, the jawbone can be affected by lower estrogen, potentially impacting tooth stability and the success of dental implants.

Burning Mouth Syndrome: Some may experience a burning sensation in the mouth.

Recent Research Highlights:

Recent studies underscore these connections. For example:

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis by Puscasu et al. found that postmenopausal women tended to have more decayed, missing, or filled teeth. This highlights the increased risk for dental caries, likely linked to decreased salivary protection.

A 2025 scoping review by Poveda-Garcés et al. confirmed that xerostomia and altered taste are among the most common oral issues in menopausal women, and pointed to indirect effects on periodontal health.

Research, including a 2024 report from Delta Dental, shows many women notice these oral changes but don't always connect them to menopause. Open conversations with your dentist are key!

A January 2025 study by Fadel et al. specifically noted that menopausal women with systemic diseases reported more oral dryness.

What can you do?

Staying proactive is key! Stay hydrated to combat dry mouth. Maintain excellent oral hygiene – brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss regularly. Don't skip regular dental check-ups and cleanings. This is crucial for early detection and management of any issues.
