How does smoking affect teeth health?

How can smoking affect my oral health?
Most people are aware that smoking is bad for their health. It can cause various medical problems, including deadly diseases in some cases. Many people, however, are unaware of the damage smoking causes to their lips, gums, and teeth. In the worst-case scenario, tobacco usage can lead to tooth discoloration, gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancer.

Why are my teeth stained?
One of the effects of smoking is teeth discoloration caused by nicotine and tar in tobacco. It can quickly color your teeth yellow, and heavy smokers frequently complain that their teeth are almost brown after smoking for some time.

How will smoking affect my gums and teeth?
Cigarette smoking can also cause gum disease. Smokers are more prone to develop bacterial plaque, which leads to gum disease. The affected gums do not recover because smoking limits the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream. Compared to nonsmokers, smoking causes more dental plaque and accelerates the onset of gum disease. Adult tooth loss is still most commonly caused by gum disease.

How is smoking linked with cancer?
While most people are aware that smoking can lead to lung and throat cancer, many are not aware that it is one of the leading causes of oral cancer. Each year, hundreds of people die from mouth cancer caused by smoking.

What special dental products can I use?
We have different kinds of toothpaste explicitly intended for smokers. They are slightly more abrasive than conventional toothpaste, so use with caution. Your dentist may recommend that you use both of these types of toothpaste and your usual toothpaste. There are various varieties of whitening toothpaste available on the market. Although they do not affect the natural color of your teeth, they help remove stains and improve your teeth' overall appearance.

What about mouthwashes?
People who smoke are more prone than nonsmokers to have poor breath. Fresh breath treatments, such as mouthwashes, may temporarily assist in masking the condition, but they will not heal it.

How often should I visit my dentist?
You must see your dentist regularly for a routine check-up and a complete mouth examination to detect any other issues early.

You should see your dentist as frequently as they recommend. People who smoke are more prone to have discolored teeth and may require more frequent visits to the dental hygienist.

What can my dentist do for me?
Your dentist will do frequent examinations to ensure that your teeth, gums, and entire mouth are healthy.
Your dental staff will also examine your cheeks, tongue, and throat for any signs of other disorders that should be investigated further.
They may also be able to bring you in touch with organizations and self-help groups that have the most recent instructions on how to quit smoking.

Will I need any extra treatment?
Your dentist may also send you to a dental hygienist for additional treatment, thorough cleaning, and monitoring of your mouth's health. Your dental hygienist can advise you on how frequently you should see them, although it is usually every three to six months.
